Alright, the time has come to give you the juicy details on why I drink green, slimy-looking water. I know a lot of bloggers open their posts with a ton of irrelevant things before they get to the good part and TBH I always hate that. When you have to *scroll scroll scroll* before finding the goods that you came for.
So, without further ado – here is what you need to know about this powerful green supplement.
WHAT IS CHLOROPHYLL?
Now, most of us know that chlorophyll is the pigment that gives plants their vibrant green hue and helps them transform sunlight into energy through photosynthesis… Or maybe you didn’t? Either way, now you know.
But what I am SURE most of you are unaware of is just how magical chlorophyll is for our bodies.
Now, the interesting piece of information that I never share on Instagram because well, it seems a bit boring LOL – is that what’s marketed as liquid chlorophyll (what you find in chlorophyll water or chlorophyll drops) is actually called chlorophyllin. Chlorophyllin is a supplement; a semi-synthetic mixture of salts derived from natural chlorophyll. Samantha Presicci, R.D, breaks this down a bit further in Shape Magazine, saying that “water-soluble nutrients are more readily absorbed into the body; fat-soluble nutrients need fat to absorb and take longer for your body to process. Drinking chlorophyllin means you’ll potentially reap the benefits faster than you would by eating it in chlorophyll-filled veggie form.”
So, when looking to buy liquid chlorophyll double-check the ingredients – you want to see “chlorophyllin” listed!
WHERE DO WE GET CHLOROPHYLL FROM?
Chlorophyll can be obtained from food or supplements. Foods rich in this compound include spinach, asparagus, matcha, green beans, peas, collard greens, mustard greens, chlorella, spirulina, alfalfa, parsley, and broccoli (to name a few).
In an article for Spartan, wellness expert Keith Kantor, Ph.D. explains that “supplements are more effective for digestion because plant-based chlorophyll does not survive digestion long enough for absorption…”
So, I personally supplement with liquid chlorophyll to ensure I am nourishing my body to the best of my ability. As you continue reading you’ll soon see just how powerful this compound is for our system & why you’ll soon be drinking green water with me.
WHY IS CHLOROPHYLL SO GREAT?
Here are my top 3 reasons I supplement with liquid chlorophyll:
DETOXIFICATION
Chlorophyll not only helps the liver by taking on some of last night’s toxin removal (hello spicy margarita); it also nourishes your liver with oxygen and magnesium.
I want to spend one quick second talking about the liver because so many of us walk around totally unaware of just how big of a role our liver plays in our overall health and wellbeing. For example, brain fog is a symptom of toxic buildup in the liver – and supplementing with chlorophyll helps to absorb the toxins so our healthy cells don’t! When we are able to rid ourselves of the toxins lying dormant in our liver – the rest of our organs, muscles, digestive system, and emotional and energetic bodies get nourished!
Chlorophyll gives our cells extra love and protection from heavy metal toxicity, too! So feel free to order that spicy tuna roll for the 2nd time this week
And it doesn’t stop there. Chlorophyll binds up toxic pesticide residue and excretes it from the body (think, non-organic fruits, veggies, green juices, smoothies).
Alright, last one! Let me sum it up for you…Chlorophyll binds to toxic junk to block it from reaching us. It creates what we could call a “protective shield” inside our bodies so that we have a barrier between toxicity and our cells. There’s a study from Oregon State University that explains that this “shield” sticks to carcinogens in our system so that they don’t get into our GI tract, making us sick later. Think – alcohol, fried oily food, pollution, judgmental self-talk – all toxic!
ANTIOXIDANT-RICH
Chlorophyll’s antioxidant properties help to neutralize oxidative stress and free radicals, so it can aid recovery, support skin health and so much more goodness. And while I’m here I might as well explain why antioxidants are so fab.
Antioxidants are molecules that fight free radicals in our bodies. Free radicals are compounds that can cause harm if their levels become too high. They’re linked to multiple illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Our bodies do have their own antioxidant defenses to keep free radicals in check, but we get powerful antioxidants from our food as well! Especially in fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based, whole foods. Antioxidants are the hardest-working skin-care ingredients in the game. So, by scavenging free radicals AKA the number one skin-aging culprit – it promotes a brighter, more even complexion. Basically, antioxidants are the superstars at nixing fine lines and keeping skin looking fresh as hell.
\Dr. Devika Icecreamwala, a board-certified dermatologist explains that liquid chlorophyll “can certainly help when thinking of ways to keep your skin looking younger and healthier in a more natural way. It’s an excellent source of vitamins A, C, E, and K — these can act to replenish the skin and keep it firm, increase collagen production, and help reduce free radical damage.”
OVERALL VIBRANCY & WELLBEING
Chlorophyll is the life force of plants. As we ingest it, we take on its vibrational energy! It may not feel as sweet as sleeping in, but it will help carry you through the day with more clarity and pep in your step.
Chlorophyll’s molecular structure is also remarkably similar to human hemoglobin; this means it increases and strengthens red blood cells which result in better transportation of oxygen AKA they can then carry more oxygen around our bodies and therefore gives us more energy!
Consuming chlorophyll in water can help keep the body alkaline. Diets high in unhealthy food, or even excess coffee can change the body’s pH balance, making it more acidic, which can lead to insomnia and weight gain. Alkaline substances are essential to re-balance!!! It has also been shown that by reducing acidity we reduce inflammation which is always a win
There is no better way to boost your immune system and fight infection than drinking chlorophyll water daily. It has the power to regenerate our bodies at the molecular and cellular levels. This magic green goodness supports our entire body by helping to flush out toxins that cause disease, it promotes healing and supports your heart while being an extremely potent antioxidant.

HOW TO ADD CHLOROPHYLL INTO YOUR DIET:
Personally, I drink anywhere from 1-3 tsp of chlorophyll a day. I keep 1 fl ounce with me when I travel in a cute little dropper bottle. Chlorophyll is one of my non-negotiables, especially when I travel! Because, well, I don’t know about you but for me, travel usually means weird sleep patterns, more booze, and less movement.
You can add chlorophyll to your water, tea, smoothies, and my personal favorite is making a chlorophyll matcha latte
I recommend consulting your doctor before starting any new supplement to ensure it is right for you!
